This picture shows the "layers" of terrain that we passed as we drove up the east entrance to the park. It started out as flat dessert with Joshua Trees scattered around (foreground). It gradually got hilly (midground) and we eventually entered into the rugged beauty of the Sierra Nevadas (background).
