Maya PLE Contest

FOCUS: This animation was made for the Maya PLE contest. It required that the character, Kilron, climb a rope for no more than ten seconds. Contestants must also include a textured pose, shown below.

LESSONS LEARNED: I learned a lot more from this project than I was expecting. The biggest problem came from the rigging process. The wrist on most characters has a tendency to collapse when twisted even slightly. After many failed attempts, I finally came up with a rig that consisted of an expression that would drive a non-linear deformer that deformed a blend shape which would then drive an influence object. Pretty simple, right?

TEXTURED POSE

As the second requirement, all the contestants had to pose and texture the character in any way they chose. The biggest challenge here was deciding if he should have a robotic feel, or that of a living creature. I've never known any robot to have fingernails or nostrils, and the concept drawings for the character clearly reflected a human being. I took the approach that it would be an alien-ish skin/suit with metallic armor, as shown here.
